04 May SACADA New Name & New Website
San Antonio Council on Alcohol and Drug Abuse to Become
San Antonio Council on Alcohol and Drug AWARENESS
San Antonio, Texas – On May 4, 2018, the San Antonio Council on Alcohol and Drug Abuse, a San Antonio nonprofit with a 60-year history, will change its name to San Antonio Council on Alcohol and Drug Awareness (SACADA). The new name better reflects what they do in our community.
SACADA was established in November 1957 by a group of influential citizens whose lives had been affected by the disease of alcoholism. Since then, SACADA has been the leader in Bexar County providing prevention, intervention, and recovery support services to children and adults for substance use and related consequences.
According to the Surgeon General’s Report: Facing Addiction in America (2016), 1 in 7 people in the United States is expected to develop a substance use disorder at some point in their lives and only 1 in 10 people will receive treatment. Prevention works, treatment is effective, and recovery is possible for everyone – it’s all about AWARENESS. The Principal Deputy Administrator for the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration stated, “Substance misuse is one of the critical public health problems of our time. The most recent data on substance use, misuse, and substance use disorders reveal that the problem is deepening, and the consequences are becoming deadlier than ever. There is an urgent need to raise awareness about the issue.”
Abigail G. Moore, Chief Executive Officer, stated, “We chose the name change to clearly and concisely communicate the impact our programs have on children and adults in our community. Our goal is to create a greater “awareness” and prevention surrounding substance use disorders.”
A new design in the website was also launched with the name change. While the organization’s website, social media, and email domains have been updated to reflect the name change, all other contact information remains the same.
The San Antonio Council on Alcohol and Drug Awareness (SACADA) is a 501(c)(3) organization with the moto “PREVENTING problems with alcohol and other drugs before they occur, INTERVENING when they do, and PROMOTING RECOVERY for those who are addicted.”
