Mental Health Education Coordinator

POSITION DESCRIPTION SUMMARY: The Mental Health Education Coordinator is responsible in providing the day-to-day oversight of the SACADA Mental Health Awareness Training (MHAT) Project logistics including community outreach and education, coordination of partnerships, and implementing and scheduling of trainings. Working with community partners, the coordinator will ensure Mental Health First Aid and Youth Mental Health First Aid are conducted with school personnel, emergency first responders, law enforcement and other community member who can provide referrals to health services. The geographic area where project will be implemented is the Texas Health and Human Services (HHS) Region 8, which consist of 28 counties.

Core Responsibilities/Duties
  • Implement in-person evidence-based mental health awareness training to include recognizing the signs and symptoms of mental illness and identifying resources available in the community for individuals with a mental illness and other relevant resources.
  • Identify the intended individuals to receive mental health awareness training in HHS Region 8 for whom they are being trained to recognize the signs and symptoms of mental illness and how to respond appropriately and safely.
  • Identify resources and supports and develop written and electronic materials for the individuals being trained so they may assist the population of focus, particularly those with Serious Mental Illness (SMI) and/or Severe Emotional Disturbance (SED).
  • Establish referral mechanisms that increase the ability of the individuals trained in mental health awareness to refer and link the population of focus to mental health resources and services.
  • Engage community partners in formal community agreements annually that clearly outline expectations, opportunities for collaboration and leveraging of resources and processes for referrals.
  • Provide technical assistance for trainers and project partners and develop relations within the community served to key community contacts to enhance the accomplishment of goals for this project.
  • Develop and implement a mental health awareness training plan.
Education/Training/Work Experience & Skills Requirements
  •  Bachelor’s degree in the field of psychology, social work, human behavior, or related field; or commensurate experience.
  • A minimum of two (2) years demonstrated professional experience in the field working with the communities from various populations.
  • Must be able to work with a variety of people, professionals in the areas of law enforcement, education, military, primary care and specialty providers and the community at large.
  • Experience in public speaking and providing training.
  • Knowledge of mental health strategies.
  • Ability to work with large and small groups.
  • Strong organization and prioritization skills
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Excellent analytical, communication, and presentation skills.
  • Effectively work independently as well as part of a team.
  • Must be creative and have strong time management skills.
  • Intermediate proficiency with Microsoft Office, Excel, Outlook.
  • Bilingual in English and Spanish preferred
Other Requirements
  •  Have a valid, current Texas Driver’s License, a reliable vehicle and vehicle insurance
  • Lift, push or pull up to 30 pounds.
  • Will be required to bend, stoop, or climb stairs in the usual course of a work. environment either at the facility, at a school, or community location.

HOURS: Full Time Position (40 hours per work week) with flexible schedule.

  • In addition to working in the general community, SACADA staff may need to work from home as assigned due to the current COVID-19 Pandemic. Staff will follow any guidelines provided by SACADA as updated based on COVID-19 status in the community. However, any request from their supervisor to work in the office as needed on a specific assignment supersedes the guidelines until assignment is complete.

TRAVEL: Local travel about 20% - 30% of time.
OUT OF TOWN TRAVEL: 5% for trainings.

In addition to the above, the Mental Health Education Coordinator shall demonstrate a commitment to the philosophy and goals of the San Antonio Council on Alcohol and Drug Abuse and a level of energy commensurate with the Council’s expectations.
