The Role of Nutrition on the Road to Recovery
Presenter: Alexis Lawrence, Nutrition Education Coordinator, San Antonio Food Bank

There are many factors that can affect an individual’s success in recovery, not the least of which is personal wellness and nutrition, although it is often neglected. In this training, we will explore the different roles that nutrition takes part in before, during, and after recovery from substance abuse.

Fitness as a Pathway to Recovery
Presenter: Leroy Garcia, Recovery Support Specialist, SACADA

Recovery works and each individual’s pathway to recovery is as unique as they are. For SACADA Recovery Support Specialist Leroy Garcia, it was running and lots of it. Leroy will talk on the different pathways of recovery, the importance of self-care and fitness and the power in language when it comes to removing stigma associated with substances use disorders.

The Cannabis Conundrum: Health Effects, Social Impact, and Policy Dilemmas
Presenter: Betsy Jones, ACPS, Coalition Coordinator, Circles of San Antonio Coalition

Marijuana and hemp affect every part of a community, from public health and safety to racial and economic disparity. This workshop will cover marijuana facts and trends, effects on the body and brain, plant basics, cannabis use disorders, medical issues, legalization updates, and the historical treatment of cannabis and people who use it. We will look at data from legal and decriminalized states and discuss common misconceptions about the effects of THC and CBD.

Myths and Truths: MAT in Substance Use Services
Presenter: Lauren Evanski, LCDC LMSW, Center for Health Care Services

This workshop will establish and develop a greater understanding of the role of medication assisted treatment in substance use services, including its purposes, validity, and the continued stigma around its use. The goals of this workshop are to explore harm-reduction through medication-assisted treatment (MAT), identify the evidence-based uses of MAT in substance use services, and change the stigma that remains around MAT within the substance use profession.
